Rebirth Stole His World
Two days before New Year's, my boyfriend, Jeffrey Graham, planned to spend the holiday at the beach with his assistant.
I did not argue or complain. Instead, I thoughtfully packed his bags for him.
However, he mocked me, saying that I had finally learned to be considerate now that I was pregnant.
After he left, I wasted no time and went to get an abortion.
Why? In my previous life, I tried to use our child to stop him, but his assistant ended up being brutally murdered at the beach.
Jeffrey appeared calm on the surface after that incident, but just when I was about to give birth, he cruelly cut open my abdomen and killed my baby.
That was when I realizedhe had been holding a deep grudge against me all along.
This time, I was determined to make him lose everything.
Chapter 1
"Ella, Sophie is here all by herself. What's so bad about me taking her out to celebrate New Year's? If you won't let me take her out, should I just bring her home? Would that make you happy?
"If you'd really be happy, then fine. All three of us can go back together. We'll see who feels more uncomfortable at the dinner tableyou or me."
His angry voice made my head spin.
I stared blankly at the man with a sarcastic look on his face and the woman beside him who looked so upset.
The woman gently pulled on Jeffrey Graham's sleeve, her voice filled with sadness.
"Jeff, don't be so harsh with Ella. If she doesn't agree, then we won't go, okay? I've managed all these years. I'll be fine spending this year alone too."
She tried to sound cheerful, but her smile was so forced it looked worse than if she were crying.
Jeffrey's expression turned serious as he held her hand and spoke softly to comfort her. Seeing that I did not react, he got more and more impatient.
"Ella, what are you up to now? Are you planning to complain to my mom again? I'm warning you, if Sophie ends up hurt because of you, I won't forgive you.
"When are you going to stop being so jealous? I'm just taking Sophie out for New Year's. It's not like I'm not going to marry you. Why are you making such a big deal out of nothing?
"If you keep silent, I'll assume you agree. Just don't make a fuss later on."
I came back to my senses with Jeffrey's consecutive warnings.
He opened his mouth as if he wanted to say more.
However, I said first, "Okay."
Jeffrey looked surprised, and as I quietly started packing his suitcase, he felt a weird sense of unease.
Before, just mentioning Sophie Lewis would make me so jealous that we would end up arguing.
Now, he was planning to take Sophie out to celebrate New Year's, and here I was, packing his bags without showing any worry.
Jeffrey eyed me with suspicion. When he noticed the small bump on my belly, he figured it out and scoffed.
"Figures. Pregnant women surely change. They become more understanding and less fussy."
He leaned against the doorframe with a smirk on his face.
Sophie bit her lip, looking so delicate that it would tug at everyones heart.
"Ella, don't be upset. Mr. Graham just feels sorry for me being all by myself, which is why he decided to take me out for New Year's. If you really don't want us to go, don't push yourself. I can go on my own. Seriously, Ella. You can stop packing."
Sophie tried to grab the suitcase from me, but in the next second, it crashed to the floor.
My hands shook as I held the clothes. Seeing Sophie in front of me with her eyes filled with tears, I finally knew for sure that I had come back to life. I had returned to this very day when Sophie went to the beach by herself.
In my previous life, today was the day Jeffrey wanted to take Sophie out to sea for New Year's. I did not agree and insisted he could not go, and the whole thing blew up in front of the Graham family.
The Grahams locked Jeffrey up, and Sophie, in tears, went to the beach alone, where she met a tragic end.
When Jeffrey heard about her death, all he said was, "She's dead, so what? She was just a toy. She's not worth my concern."
After that, he gave in to the arranged marriage and started to pay attention to me. I thought he had finally seen the good in me.
However, when I was about to give birth to our baby, he cruelly cut open my stomach and tortured me to death.
That was when I realized that Jeffrey had always blamed me for Sophie's death. He had always hated me.
Chapter 2
Thinking about the awful things that happened before, I shivered.
God had given me another chance, and I was going to make things right.
I did not pay attention to Sophie, who looked sad, or to Jeffrey, who was yelling at me. I just calmly picked up the suitcase and started packing again.
When Jeffrey saw how calm I was, he got really mad and pushed me.
"You think you're so great, Ella, pretending you don't care. But acting like that won't make me do what you want," he said.
"Let me tell you, even if we end up getting married, I won't stop seeing Sophie. She'll even have her own room in our house. If you can't handle that, then we shouldn't get married at all."
I had heard that kind of talk so many times. Before, I would have fought with Jeffrey and even used the unborn kid to threaten him. However, now, I did not want to get married at all.
"Alright, then let's not get married."
Everything went quiet.
I looked at Jeffrey's shocked expression and said calmly, "That's fine by me. I don't want to get married either."
Jeffrey and I had known each other since we were kids. Our families decided we would get married 20 years ago. It should have been easy, but two years ago, Sophie, a new assistant, came into Jeffrey's life.
The first time I saw her, she was in Jeffrey's office. I had brought him some snacks and walked in just as he was yelling at her.
She was new and looked scared, like a little rabbit. Her eyes were red, and she was about to cry. People tried to calm Jeffrey down, but he would not listen. Finally, I could not watch anymore and stepped in to help.
Jeffrey stopped yelling at her when he saw me.
Back then, he warned me that a person like her would not last through the probationary period and would have to leave.
However, she did not leave. Instead, she captured Jeffrey's heart so much that he wished he could hold her close and treasure her all the time. He even went so far as to end his own child's life for that assistant.
Jeffrey looked into my eyes, searching for signs of jealousy, but when he saw only resolve, he suddenly felt a flicker of fear. He reached out, trying to touch my face.
At that moment, Sophie covered her mouth and sobbed. "Mr. Graham, Ella, please don't argue because of me. I'll go awayI'll go far away and never trouble you again."
After she ran off in tears, Jeffrey looked at me with the same disgust that had become all too familiar over the last two years.
"Ella, must you spoil my mood at the end of the year? If you want to marry me, don't make Sophie unhappy, or I'll never take you as my wife. I'd like to see how you'll explain your pregnancy to your family when the time comes."
With a dark look and icy eyes, Jeffrey said his piece and then hurried after Sophie.
However, it seemed he forgot that a child less than three months along could still be terminated.
As for marriage, the alliance between the Blakes and the Grahams might be easy to form but hard to dissolve, yet the Graham family had more than one son.
The vibration of my phone snapped me back to the present.
It was Sophie.
[Ella, even with the Blake family behind you, Jeffrey will always take my side.
[You'll just have to get through New Year's with your pregnancy alone. Next year, when the baby is born, you'll have a little one to keep you company, so you won't be alone.]
Her words were dripping with challenge.
I had gotten a bunch of messages that upset me, and I had shown them all to Jeffrey.
However, he always said she was just acting like a kid and told me not to worry about it, to just let her be.
He was sure I would never leave him, that I was stuck with him forever. That was why he did not care about how she acted.
With a deep sigh, I unblocked a number.
The first day of the new year was when the Blake and Graham families were supposed to meet to discuss the wedding. I had a big surprise planned for Jeffrey on that day.
Chapter 3
Right after Jeffrey left, I rushed to the hospital to get an abortion. Right before they gave me the anesthesia, I got a text from him.
[Ella, I was just mad when I said those things. Don't worry, I'll definitely marry you. I'll be back for sure on New Year's. Just wait for me.
[And about Sophie, just act like she's not there. I've talked to her, and she won't mess with our lives.]
I read his messages and just turned off the phone, feeling nothing.
Jeffrey had fought against our families' plans to get married because of Sophie not just once but many times over the last two years.
I was even ready to move to another country to let him be happy, but on the day I was supposed to leave, he came to the airport crying, begging me not to go.
We both got carried away that day, and that was how I got pregnant.
However, I did not find out until it was almost too late that Jeffrey had only come to the airport because the Graham family had used Sophie to threaten him.
Nothing and no one could change the marriage arrangement between the Blake and Graham families. So, even though Jeffrey loved Sophie, he had to marry me.
I could feel the warmth leaving my body. This baby was never meant to be.
When I woke up, I was already in a hospital ward.
By the time I heard from them, Jeffrey and Sophie were already at the beach.
Sophie had been bragging a lot, sending photos she had taken with Jeffrey. He was hugging her from behind, looking all sweet and gentle. He used to hug me like that, but now... it just made me feel sick to my stomach.
[Ella, Mr. Graham said you like the sea too. We should've invited you.
[Oh, and he's putting on a fireworks show for me. I'll send you the video!
[If I were you, I would've left a long time ago. Hanging on to Mr. Graham like that, you're just embarrassing yourself.]
I usually ignored her, but not this time. I texted back: [If you're so into Jeffrey, make sure you never let go.]
I wanted to see if Sophie would stick with him when he lost everything.
I was so tired that I just wanted to sleep, but then my phone buzzed.
It was Jeffrey, furious. "Ella, what's your problem? I said I'd marry you, so why are you being mean to Sophie again? I took her out for a nice New Year's, and you ruined it. Apologize to her, or you'll regret it on New Year's Day."
His voice was just noise to me. Annoyed, I hung up and blocked him without thinking twice.
The day I left the hospital was New Year's Eve. I went home and got rid of everything that reminded me of Jeffrey. Clothes, toothbrushes, even his booksinto the trash they went.
The house was mine, and I did not want any trace of him left.
Then, I went to my family's old house for dinner.
I was lounging on the couch, half watching TV and half scrolling through my phone out of sheer boredom.
Out of nowhere, a fireworks show exploded to the top of the trending list. The initials 'JG' and 'SL' gave it awayJeffrey had set up the fireworks just for Sophie.
Just like clockwork, Sophie sent me a video bragging about it.
[Listen up, Jeffrey made this show for me and me alone. So what if you were childhood friends? So what if you're pregnant? He doesn't love you.
[I guess your wedding isn't such a big deal. In the end, it's me he loves.]
Then, a message from someone with a black profile picture popped up on my screen. I smirked at their words.
Tonight was going to be the last blast for those two.
On New Year's Day, the Grahams had reserved a fancy private dining room to talk about the wedding.
However, Jeffrey, the man of the hour, was a no-show.
His dad, Anthony Graham, was fuming. "What's with Jeffrey? It's one thing to fool around during the holidays, but today? He's late on such an important day? You've spoiled him rotten," he scolded Jeffrey's mom, Wendy Swift, who just hung her head.
Everyone at the table had a sour look on their face because of Jeffrey's tardiness.
However, I knew he was just downstairs, waiting for me to say sorry to Sophie. He was late as a lesson for me.
I was waiting toobut for someone else.
I tried to calm both families while ignoring my phone which would not stop buzzing. Then, after half an hour of silence, the door to the room burst open. Jeffrey stormed over to me, his face a stormy shade of blue.
"Ella, I told you to say sorry to Sophie. Are you not seeing straight? This is your last chance. If you don't say sorry, forget about the wedding."
The room went dead quiet.
Anthony banged the table before shooting up from his seat, pointing at Jeffrey and yelling, "You're acting out, Jeffrey! What are you even saying? You show up late and now, you're picking on Ella? Say you're sorry to her, now!"
Dad's face was a picture of thunder, and he let out an icy huff. "Anthony, you sure did a great job raising your son. He doesn't care one bit about my daughter, does he?" he said, his voice dripping with sarcasm.
Anthony looked really upset and kept pushing Jeffrey to say he was sorry.
However, Jeffrey would not budge. Just then, Sophie came running in, tears streaming down her face.
"Mr. Graham, don't be mad at me today. I can handle a little trouble. I've been doing it my whole life," she said through her sobs.
Jeffrey's expression turned even darker. He leaned in close and whispered a threat, "Ella, if you don't say sorry, we're not getting married. And if you have a baby without being married, let's see if your family will still welcome you.
"Then, I'll tell all the reporters to write about how the only Blake daughter had a baby without getting married. Don't you think that'll smear your family's name?"
I snapped my head up, staring at him like I could not believe what I was hearing.
Jeffrey smirked and tried to sway me.
"Ella, it's just an apology. Just say sorry and all this goes away. I'll even help set the wedding date today with both our families. You know what you should do, right?"
Even though my dad was steaming mad, he never once mentioned calling off the whole engagement.
Jeffrey's smugness grew by the second.
He stood there, sure I would cave in any moment.
However, just then, the door swung open, and in walked a tall figure that caught everyone's eye.
